Welcome, and thanks for visiting my website!

I am the owner of Healthy Directions Counseling, Carol Patterson, LMHC. If you are looking for counseling, here are some topics I have a special interest in and have successful experience helping people with:

anger management, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and self esteem issues. I have a lot of experience working with people who have experienced fallout from various kinds of trauma. Creative, sensitive types as well as stressed out, or tough, angry people will find understanding from me.

I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families. Adults who are looking for an approachable, down to earth counselor will likely feel comfortable with me. I also enjoy working with teenagers and their parents, having specialized in working with teens (and their parents) for many years. I am very sympathetic to the pressures faced by- parents of teens.

Keeping a focus on safe and productive behaviors while helping people is always my first priority. I follow best practices working with GLBT people-which means I am GLBT friendly, and actively against discrimination. I also have a good deal of experience working with people who are minorities in other ways and dealing with the extra pressures of identity formation around their minority status(es).

I am licensed in Washington State and am located in Vancouver's Hazel Dell area.  If you would like to talk to someone about your situation or have your adolescent or young adult see someone, contact me by phone or e-mail me with a good time to call you.  I can arrange for evening or weekend appointments if necessary.  I accept some insurance.  All calls are free and confidential.

A special note to people who are not sure about whether "counseling" is something for them: I can really understand the concerns people have around going to counseling and the questions people might have about working with someone who may not really “get” their concerns. Before starting this business, I worked for over nine years  with court involved teens and their families.  As you can imagine, some of the kids and families weren't really thrilled about doing counseling type stuff.  Long story short, there are dozens of local teens and families who came in skeptical and left happier -and- glad they worked with me. If you are someone who is not sure if counseling is for you, I invite you to give me a call to see if you think we might work well together.
